Skiathos, one of the most scenic and verdant Greek islands, owes its evergreen look to the trees scattered all over the place. But, what gives Skiathos this charming and attractive character, is its impressive coastline. There are more than 60 awe-inspiring beaches with white or golden, soft sand and crystal clear waters. The sublime scenery is highlighted by the history of the island and the hospitality of its people. Skiathos is like a piece of jewelry of the Aegean Sea!

The island is famous for its lively nightlife which makes it one of the top destinations for young people. Types of accommodation range from luxurious 5-star hotels and villas to simple rooms and studios or organised campsites for the nature lovers.

Skiathos Town is the heart of the island, with all the major events taking place there and some of the most popular beaches, which are easily accessed by bus or even by foot, very close to it. Even though Skiathos Town is the most populated village on the island, it is not the only one which offers quality accommodation and facilities. Along the southern coast of the island, you will find small summer resorts offering a range of alternatives, according to your preferences.

Whether you are on holiday with your family and you would like a tranquil atmosphere or with your friends and seeking for adventures, Skiathos is the right place for you! Needless to say that it is the heaven on Earth for the adventurers due to its mountainous terrain and the wild beaches of the northern side. For your romantic self, the island has spectacular panoramic views from the hills up north as well from the harbour of Skiathos Town where you can unwind with a glass of wine at the bars on the waterfront just opposite of the Bourtzi Fortress.

The island has a long history starting from the pre-historic era and continuing to the Classical, Byzantine and Venetian period. The majority of the monuments of the island are Byzantine churches and monasteries. Among the most popular sights are the Bourtzi Fortress and the Medieval Castle of the Old Town.

Apart from the historic attractions, when you are on the island it is worth visiting some of the most beautiful natural sights, such as the wetland of Koukounaries, the Sea caves and Lalaria, the pebbly beach right next to them on the northeast side, as well as the islet Tsougrias. The picture-postcard scenery of these areas will make you want to stay on Skiathos forever!

The beaches on the northern side are very quiet and secluded, because they are difficult to reach by car or bus. However, there are boats running from Skiathos Town regularly to take you there. The most popular beaches are the sheltered sandy beaches of the south coast where you will find all sorts of facilities, from accommodation, bars with sun loungers and restaurants to well-organised water sports schools.

If you are into sports it is worth signing up in one of these schools and going diving to explore the beauty of the Mediterranean sea. There are more than 300 fish species in the Sporades group of islands, such as dolphins, swordfish, tuna and rare red corals. You could also go horse riding or hiking in the well-defined walking trails in various locations around the island. Alternatively, you could take part in one of the daily tours organised from Skiathos old port. Some of the most popular ones are the tour to Skopelos, Alonisos and the Marine Park or the Mama Mia tour around the locations where the movie was filmed.

For those of you who like cultural events, there are plenty of festivals in the summer. Even if you don’t speak the Greek language, it is a great chance to get to know another aspect of the Greek culture. The Papadiamantis House is definitely worth a visit as it is a typical example of the architecture of the island.

If you want to have a taste of Skiathos cuisine in particular, you should try some of the local products produced with the finest ingredients, such as local sweet preserves, honey and olives from the olive trees of the island, as well as the freshly caught fish.

All in all, this small island with the natural beauty, the vivid nightlife and the hospitable and friendly people can turn your holidays into a memorable experience. You will absolutely love it!
